What is Bill of Materials (BOM)?

Last updated July 2026

Definition

A bill of materials (BOM) is the structured list of parts and quantities needed to build or maintain something. Accurate BOMs drive accurate demand for spares and materials.

Also known as: BOM

In MRO, equipment BOMs link assets to the spares they consume, which is the basis for criticality and forecasting.

Stale or incomplete BOMs are a hidden cause of both stockouts and excess.
