What is Service Level?

Last updated July 2026

Definition

Service level is the target probability of meeting demand from stock. It sets the safety stock required — and rises steeply in cost near 100%.

Chasing a uniformly high service level everywhere is what creates excess. Differentiating by item criticality is what controls it.

The goal is the right service level per item, not the highest possible everywhere.
