What is Purchase Requisition?

Last updated July 2026

Definition

A purchase requisition is the internal request to buy something, which becomes a purchase order once approved. It's the entry point of the procure-to-pay cycle.

Requisitions are where policy meets reality — where off-contract buying either gets caught or slips through.

Benchmarking at requisition time flags overpriced or unnecessary buys before a PO exists.
