What is Human-in-the-Loop (HITL)?
Last updated July 2026
Human-in-the-loop means a person reviews and approves an AI system's higher-stakes decisions before they take effect. It gives autonomous operations governance and an audit trail.
Also known as: HITL, human oversight
For operations leaders wary of black-box automation, human-in-the-loop is the safety model: the AI proposes and handles the routine, but material calls — a large buy, a disposition, an exception — wait for sign-off.
The result is speed with control: teams get the throughput of automation without surrendering judgment on the decisions that carry risk.
