What is Agentic AI?

Last updated July 2026

Definition

Agentic AI refers to AI systems that take goal-directed action — planning, deciding, and executing multi-step tasks — rather than only answering questions. In operations, agentic AI handles routine decisions and escalates exceptions to people.

Also known as: AI agents, agentic automation

The distinction from earlier automation is initiative: rule-based automation (RPA) follows a fixed script, while agentic AI decides what to do next toward a goal and adapts when conditions change.

In industrial operations, that means continuously watching inventory and procurement, taking the routine actions, and surfacing the value calls and exceptions for a human to approve.
